Perlite
Perlite is a mineral of volcanic origin , mainly silicates, which
expand more than twenty times their original volume when they are
warmed up until this point of softening. This process of expansion
is caused by the water presence within the crude mineral. When this
is warmed up approximately to 900º C, the water is vaporized and
forced the softened mineral to expand. This way, small volcanic
glass bubbles take place, responsible for the exceptional properties
of expanded perlite. It provides ventilation and lightness to the
soil.
