Place of origin: Northwest of Argentina, province of Jujuy, near the border with Bolivia.

Description: The species presents subglobular stem, compressed on apex and wider in the upper part than in the lower one. Its general aspect is flattened and the upper part appears slightly from the ground. It measures between 5 and 16 mm. high and about 15 or 30 mm. wide.
The areolas are arranged on tubercles and present between 8 and 15 spines of about 5 mm. long.
The flowers are pale pink although they can be white or pale purple also. They are about 10 mm. long and about 20 mm. wide. Flowering is diurnal and it takes place at the end of the spring.
The fruits are about 2 or 3 mm. wide and stay protected in the central depression of the plant by several months, until being expelled just at the end of the spring of the following year, when flower buds develop.
