| Place of origin:
Northwest of Argentina, province of Jujuy, near the border
with Bolivia.
Description: The species presents subglobular
stem, compressed on apex and wider in the upper part than
in the lower one. Its general aspect is flattened and the
upper part appears slightly from the ground. It measures between
5 and 16 mm. high and about 15 or 30 mm. wide.
The areolas are arranged on tubercles and present between
8 and 15 spines of about 5 mm. long.
The flowers are pale pink although they can be white or pale
purple also. They are about 10 mm. long and about 20 mm. wide.
Flowering is diurnal and it takes place at the end of the
spring.
The fruits are about 2 or 3 mm. wide and stay protected in
the central depression of the plant by several months, until
being expelled just at the end of the spring of the following
year, when flower buds develop.
Growing tips: Full sun and very well drained,
porous soil. |
