Norwest Argentina. South of Bolivia.
Description: The plant, known as "cardon",
presents columnar stem, branched when adult, of 30 cm. wide
and up to 10 ms. high.
The ribs, little prominent, are 20 but can be 40 in older
plants.
The areolas are brown color and they are very close to each
other.
The spines are many, variable and it is difficult to tell
between radial and centrals. Its length can be between 4 and
14 cm. older specimens, acute, rigid, and of dark yellow or
brown color. In the upper part of the stem, they become flexible,
long, silky and of clearer color generally white.
The flowers open at night and appear laterally in the proximities
of apex. They are about 12 cm., white, and they have the tube
covered by long blackish hairs.
The fruit is oval, measures about 3 or 4 cm. and is of greenish
color.
Growing tips: Propagation is made by seeds
