Place of origin: Even when the exact place of origin is not known, it is a species very cultivated in the subtropical zones, and that have become very common in Mexico, the mediterranean region and the south of Africa.

Description: The species, known as "chumbera", presents ligneous, very branched trunk, and takes arborescent bearing reaching the 5 m. high.
The articles are oval or oblong, big, heavy, fleshy, and can reach 40 cm. long.
The areolas are small and generally without spines, but they are provided with numerous glochids of yellow color, that are almost completely lost in the old stems.
The flowers are big and of yellow color.
The fruit is edible, oval, with a depression in apex and of yellow, reddish or red color according to the variety. It presents areolas without spines with abundant glochids of yellow color.
There are numerous varieties.
The plant is cultivated abundantly for the obtaining of fruits.

Growing tips: It requires full sun and porous soil. Propagation is made by cuttings.
