Opuntia brasiliensis
(Willd.) Haworth

 
 
     

Place of origin: South of Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru and east of Bolivia.

Description: The species, which can reach up to 4 m. high in natural state, presents raised stem, naked or spiny, of about 25 cm. wide, from where lateral branches a little horizontal or raised, appear. The articles are thin of 15 cm. long and 6 cm. wide.
The areolas are small and each one presents 1 or 2 spines of approximately 1.5 cm. long.
The flowers are yellow and measure about 5 cm. long.
The fruit is spherical, of about 4 cm. wide, and have areolas provided with short yellow spines.
There are known numerous varieties of this species.

Growing tips: It requires some winter heat and a higher environmental humidity than most of cactus. Propagation is made by cuttings.
