Description: The species presents globular
stem at first, but becomes more cylindrical, reaching up to
1 m. high and 10 cm. wide, as the plant grows. It send branches
from the base forming groups of something curved stems, which
become raised as they grow. Apex is rounded in the younger
units and oblique in older ones.
The ribs are little prominent and they are 30 or more.
The radial spines are thin and silky, they are approximately
15, of about 5 mm. long and yellow. The central spines are
thin and bended downwards, they are between 3 and 4, of about
4 cm. long, and of golden color. When they first appear, the
spines are reddish and form a small raised group in apex which
is characteristic of the species.
The flowers are about 4 cm. long and 5 cm. of wide, they appear
in the proximity of apex and are yellow.
Growing tips: The plant is cultivated abundantly
since it is easy to grow. It does not produce flowers until
reaching an approximated size of 20 cm. It resist cold very
well and requires partial shade. Propagation is made by seeds
or by rooting basal offsets. |
