| Place of origin:
Mexico, from the state of San Luis Potosi to the state of
Oaxaca.
Description: The species reaches up to 4
m. high and is big and arborescent in its natural habitat.
The stem is columnar with articles curved upwards. The plants
in culture obtained by cuttings, do not develop trunk and
send branches from the base.
The stem is bluish green and measure between 6 and 10 cm.
wide.
The ribs are 5 or 6, wider on the base, and present distanced,
little felted areolas.
The radial spines can be 5 or more. They are reddish , and
measure about 2 mm. long. There is only one central spines,
compressed laterally, blackish, and of between 2 and 7 cm.
long.
The flowers present short tube and measure between 2.5 and
3.5 cm. wide.
The fruits measure between 1 and 2 cm., are globose and bluish.
They are edible and in Mexico they are consumed fresh or dried
and their known as "garambullos".
Growing tips: Propagation is made easily
by seeds or cuttings. |
