Matucana
Matucana is a genus which includes about 20 species from Peru. It
is closely related to Borzicactus. The plants are generally globular,
but with tendency to become a little columnar with years. The name
of the genus comes from the city with the same name, located in Peru
to the northeast of Lima, at high altitude in the western mountain
range.
Plants of this genus have attractive flowers of long neck, generally
white, red, or orange, according to the species. The flowering takes
place in spring or summer.
They need some winter heat and porous well drained drained soil, since
the roots will rot easily if the soil is wet for to long, specially
when the climate is cold. They require full sun, but in areas with
intense heat will do better with some shade.
