Place of origin: Mexico, state of Hidalgo.

Description: The species have small stem, of about 10 cm. high. It can be found densely clumped by its base or by the side.
The tubercles measure about 5 mm. long and its base is a little woolly.
The radial spines are between 12 and 14. They are between 5 and 9 mm. long, are arranged as a star and are of cream color but soon to become white.
The central spines are between 3 and 5. Its color varies between clear and dark brown, and they measure up to 1.5 cm. long.
The flowers are of whitish or of clear yellow color and they measure approximately 1.7 cm. long and 1.3 cm. wide. The flowering does not take place until the plant have three years.
The fruit is orange and measures 1 cm. long.
There are varieties like fragilis, even better known than the type species, smaller and with central spines of white color with the brown extremity; and pulchella, a little thinner, with smaller amount of radial spines, and without central thorns.

Growing tips: Propagation is made easily by cuttings or by rooting offsets. It resists cold well if it is dry.
