Mexico, state of Hidalgo.
Description: The plant have thin, cylindrical
stems, of between 6 and 15 cm. long and between 1.5 and 3.5
cm. wide. It can be found densely clumped forming groups.
Within those groups, some stems are raised and other are semi
crawlers.
The tubercles are thin and have conical shape.
The radial spines are arranged in star form. They are are
short, about 20 and they are of golden yellow color. The central
spines are generally absent, although in some varieties they
can appear between 1 and 3, of up to 1 cm. long.
The flowers are of very clear yellow color and measure approximately
1.5 cm. long.
There are different varieties like obscurior, with spines
of darker base color and thin stems; stella-aurata, with yellow
spines which are darker on the tip and a thin central spines;
and tenuis, with raised and thinner stems.
Growing tips: The species is easy to grow,
but it must stay perfectly dry during autumn and winter or
it can be wilt easily. Propagation is made by rooting basal
offsets.
