Mexico, from the state of San Luis Potosi to the states Queretaro
and Ixmiquilpan.
Description: The species is very variable.
It have globular stem but it becomes a little cylindrical
with age, reaching 20 cm. high. It send offsets from its base
forming big groups.
Tubercles are short, heavy, and have white wool on their base.
The spines, all radial, are between 4 and 6, reddish when
young, soon to become white and later gray as the plant grows
old. The inferior spine can be up to 7 cm. and it is projected
downwards.
The flowers are violet pink color or purple.
The fruits are about 2 cm. long. They are of clear red color.
There are different varieties like fulvispina, with 5 yellowish
brown color spines and a little woolly armpits; and longiseta,
a little bigger and woolly, with 7 white and long spines.
Advice of culture: This is an easy to grow
species. It grows very well at full sun or partial shade.
Propagation is made by rooting basal offsets. |
