In 1839 Lemaire created the Anhalonium genus to designate a plant
which is classified in Ariocarpus today. Today, this name is not
used. Instead Lophophora is used to denominate two or more species
according to different authors.
The name comes from Greek the lophos, crest and phoreo, to wear,
due to the presence of wool on the areolas.
