South of Ecuador and North of Peru.
Description: The plant has green columnar
stem with turgid skin, of between 2 and 4 m. high and up to
12 cm. wide. It has between 20 and 30 cleared ribs, on which
the areolas are arranged. They are white and are separated
about 5 mm. to each other. Each areola has 12 acicular spines,
of between 4 and 7 mm long and of variable color between yellow,
reddish or yellowish. In the upper areolas there can appear
1 or 2 central spines of up to 8 cm. long. The stem this completely
covered by smooth pale white or yellow hairs of 1 or 2 cm.
in long.
The flowers are white color and about 5 cm. long and about
6 cm. wide. They appear in the upper part of articles on the
lateral pseudocephalium. The fruits are juicy and edible.
Advice of culture: This is a slow growing
species, which develops very well in full sun or in partial
shade. It is propagated by seeds or cuttings. |
