Encephalocarpus strobiliformis
(Werdermann) Berger

Place of origin: Mexico. States of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.

Description: This species have a big axonomorfic and compressed root. It has spherical stem of between 4 and 6 cm. wide and it is covered by overlapping grayish green tubercles arranged in spiral. These have woolly base and are flat. The young ones have in the internal part of the apex small woolly areolas with short little pectinated spines, that disappear soon. THe older tubercles show the apex naked and obtuse. The flowers appear when the plant has between 6 and 8 years. They are about 3 cm. and they are pink.

Growing tips: Older specimens send basal offsets, although they develop real slow. This is why propagation is made by seeds. The plant requires certain winter heat, full sun and porous substrate.
