Echinocereus
There are about 45 Echinocereus species from Mexico and southern United
States. The first part of the name comes from Greek echínos,
porcupine; whereas the second part comes from Latin cereus, big candle.
The flowers are funnel shaped and remain open day and night. The fruits
are red.
Some Echinocereus are very cold resistant and can stand even -17º
C.
The genus is propagated by seeds or cuttings.
