Description: The species shows turgid and
thin stems, between 3 and 6 cm. wide and up to 2 m. high.
It clumps from its base and it is covered of white spines.
It has about 25 little prominent and narrow ribs.
Areolas are small, they are provided with white wool and are
separated 0.5 cm. from each other.
Spines are more than 30. They are straight, thin, white and
about 1.5 cm. long. They are also 4 yellow spines of about
2 and 4 cm. long.
Flowers are distributed throughout the stems, they are tubular,
extended and opened only by their end. They are about 8 to
9 cm. long and 1 cm. wide. Flowers are a little curved downwards
and are of dark red color.
The variety fricii is also known in culture, with radial spines
of 5 cm. long, and white central spines.
Growing tips: As the roots extend remarkably,
this species does better in big pots. It can stand low temperatures
and requires full sun. Propagation is made by seeds or cuttings. |
