Cephalocereus senilis
(Haworth) Pfeiffer

Place of origin: Mexico, states of Hidalgo and Guanajuato.

Description: Plant with columnar stem and up to 15 m. high and 40 cm. wide. It color is pale green and it has 10 to 15 ribs in the young individuals. The ribs are doubled in specimens bigger than 1 m. high.
This species usually does not ramify and when it does the ramifications appear at basal level.
The areolas are very close together and have 1 to 5 yellow colored spines and between 20 and 30 white hairs. As the plant grows, the lower part of the stem loses these hairs, only remaining the thorns, whereas the superior part stays densely covered by white hairs.
Flowers appear on the side of the plant near the apex. The internal segments are cream colored and extenal reddish. Flowering is nocturnal.
The fruit is red and with yellow hairs.
