| Place of origin:
Peru, northeastern Lima, valley of the Mantaro river.
Description: The plant have columnar stem
of shining blue color. It size is up to 8 m. high and 30 cm.
wide. It ramified stem has around 18 ribs, thickened around
the areolas. With age they become tuberous, with a depression
in shape of wedge around tubercles.
The areolas of the young buds, have 4 radial spines and between
1 and 3 long ones, that can reach 8 cm. In the older parts
of the plant, the number of spines is up to 30. They are yellow
colored or with the superior part of brown color and the base
yellow.
The flowers have 5 cm. wide, are violet-brown and the segments
of periant white. Flowering is nocturnal.
