| Place of origin:
Mexico, central mountain region.
Description: The species, also known as
"Birrete de obispo" or Bishop's cap, presents globular
stem and depressed in the apex. It size is 10 or 25 cm. wide,
but it can turn slightly columnar with age. It is green colored,
but due to the abundant white scales that cover the whole
plant, its appearance is grayish white. The ribs are generally
five, although there are also varieties of 4 to 8 ribs. They
are very prominent and acute. The areolas are very small and
are very close together. They are completely naked and they
are covered by grayish hairs. The flowers are around 6 cm.
wide and yellow colored. There are diverse varieties; quadricostatum,
just 4 ribs; and nudum, green stem color, and completely naked.
Growing tips: The plant does not produce
offsets, thus propagation is made by seeds.
Nevertheless, if the superior part of the older plants is
cutted, new sprouts appear in the stem.
It requires full sun and porous soil.
