Acanthocalycium thionanthum

Place of origin: Norwestern Argentina, Salta, near Cachi.

Description: The plant, spherical, becomes a little cylindrical with time, forming clumps by the emission of basal sprouts. It grows beyond the 12 cm. of height, with 6 to 10 cm. widht. The ribs are approximately 14 and tuberous ones. The areola are at first stage covered by a yellow felt, extended in the inferior part, but with the superior one embracing laterally the sides of the ribs, until composing a kind of small shield. The radial thorns can be 10, whereas central between 1 and 4. All are approximately 1.5 cm. in length and brown colored in the beginning, becoming gray or of yellowish white color with age. The flowers are approximately 5 cm. and of yellow color.

Growing tips: Best if propagated by rooting basal sprouts.
