 The
Lophophora williamsii cactus, best known with the names peyote,
mescal or mezcal, contains several hallucinogenic alkaloids,
and has been used by shamans of different amerindian tribes.
At present time, in the United States, the use and the possession
of peyote are prohibited. But laws had to make an exception
with the members of the Native American Church, a Christian
sect with more than 200,000 members, among them about 40,000
navajos, whose statutes establish that the it's followers must
use peyote like sacrament during the cult. |
